Château de Sourniac

Château de Sourniac, Medieval castle in Sourniac, France.

Château de Sourniac is a stone castle in the Cantal region with three round towers enclosing the main living quarters and a neo-Romanesque chapel standing beside the main building. The complex sits at high elevation above the surrounding landscape, creating a structured ensemble where defensive features blend with the residential spaces that define the property.

The current structure was raised in 1636 to replace a much older fortress that stood on the same ground centuries before. That earlier stronghold fell to military forces during the conflicts of medieval times, and this newer castle was built as a response to those events and changing needs.

The castle represents the architectural transition between medieval defensive structures and Renaissance-style noble residences in the Cantal region.

The property sits on elevated terrain east of the village, accessible by roads through the surrounding countryside. Since it remains privately owned, visitors should contact in advance to arrange any tours or access to the grounds.

A pond covering one hectare sits near the castle grounds, creating a reflective landscape feature on the property. The chapel underwent significant changes in the final years of the 1800s, when new Gothic-style window openings were added to update its appearance.
