Staustufe Frouard-Pompey, Water control structure in Grand Est, France
Staustufe Frouard-Pompey is a water control structure on the Moselle River that regulates the river flow for navigation. The lock spans about 176 meters in length and 12 meters in width, allowing inland vessels to pass through the water level difference.
The barrage was completed in 1972 as part of a major project to improve navigation on the Moselle River. It has since played a key role in maintaining regular waterway traffic in the region.
The barrage reflects French engineering expertise in water management while supporting maritime activities that shape regional commerce and transportation.
Visitors can watch vessels pass through the lock from several viewing areas along the waterway and see the gates operate. The best viewing times are typically in the morning and afternoon when boat traffic is more frequent.
An adjoining hydroelectric facility at Pompey generates electricity from the water pressure while working in tandem with the lock system. This combined use of the waterway for both navigation and power production is an efficient use of the river's resources.
