Borjomi

Borjomi is a town nestled in a mountain valley at roughly 820 meters elevation, surrounded by peaks of the Lesser Caucasus range. The town spreads along the Mtkvari River valley and is framed by forest-covered slopes and steep mountainsides.

In the 1800s, Russian doctors found the mineral springs here and recognized their health benefits, sparking interest from people seeking treatment. The discovery transformed the area into a health resort that attracted visitors from across the region.

Trains and buses connect Borjomi to Tbilisi on a journey of roughly three hours through mountain terrain. Comfortable walking shoes are helpful since the town sits on slopes and exploring the surrounding hills and forests is a common activity.

The Borjomi-Kharagauli National Park protects roughly 85,000 hectares of forest surrounding the town, making it one of Europe's largest forested reserves. Hikers can follow marked trails through these woods and encounter wildlife and plants rarely found elsewhere in the continent.
