Dmanisi is an archaeological site in southeastern Georgia that contains layers from different time periods stacked upon each other. The excavation reveals stone tools, human fossils, and medieval structures spread across the hillside.

The area was initially settled by early humans and later became a bishop's seat in the 6th century. It grew into a major trading post during the 9th and 10th centuries.

The ruins of Dmanisi Sioni cathedral reflect the medieval Christian heritage of this region. The architectural style visible in the stones shows how people built during Georgia's period of cultural flourishing.

The site sits on a hillside and is best explored on foot, with sturdy footwear recommended. Basic visitor facilities are available on-site, but plan enough time to see the different excavation areas.

Scientists discovered fossils here dating back nearly 1.8 million years. These remains rank among the oldest known human finds discovered outside Africa.
