Fortress of Bagrati

The castle stretches across 55 by 27 meters with stone walls rising to 12 meters in height, featuring an oval structure and rectangular entrance tower.

Built during the late 10th or 11th century, the fortress served as a defensive stronghold for the dukes of Tskhumi until its abandonment in the 16th century.

Archaeological excavations in the 1950s revealed numerous artifacts including wine containers, jugs, and glazed pottery from the 12th through 14th centuries.

The fortress stands on a hill overlooking the Basla River, with remains of ancient tunnels and gateways accessible for exploration during daylight hours.

The castle walls contain visible evidence of different construction periods, incorporating both local limestone and imported materials in their defensive architecture.
