Fortress of Bagrati

The Fortress of Bagrati is a medieval castle on Georgia's Black Sea coast built with stone walls in an oval shape and featuring a rectangular entrance tower. The structure includes remains of multiple interior spaces and passageways, with gates and tunnels still visible within the main walls.

This fortress was built as a defensive stronghold during the late antique or early medieval period for the local ruling families. Over time it was rebuilt and reinforced several times before eventually being abandoned.

This fortress served the local population as both a refuge and a place of daily activity for hundreds of years. The rooms and spaces within show signs of how people lived, cooked, and worked during their time here.

The ruins sit on a hilltop and are best explored during daylight when paths and interior spaces are well lit. The ground is uneven in many places and can be slippery, so wear sturdy shoes and watch your footing carefully.

The walls reveal different building phases with varying stone types and construction methods, showing how the fortress evolved over centuries. Some stones were imported from distant locations, indicating trade connections and the resources available to those who ruled here.
