Sukhumi botanical garden

The garden extends across 50 hectares with over 5,000 plant species, including rare specimens from the Caucasus region and worldwide collections.

Founded in 1840 by General Nikolay Raevsky, the garden initially served military purposes, providing fruits and vegetables to soldiers stationed along the Black Sea coast.

The garden maintains scientific partnerships with the Institute of Botany of Abkhazia and the Main Botanical Garden of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

The exhibition area spans 5 hectares divided into 50 sections connected by walking paths, allowing visitors to explore different plant collections systematically.

A 250-year-old Caucasian linden tree, which predates the garden's establishment, continues to flower and produce fruit despite surviving a 1987 hurricane.
