Skorpios, Private island in Ionian Sea, Greece.
Skorpios is a private island in the Ionian Sea near the community of Spartochori in Greece, covering roughly 83 hectares. The grounds contain several residential buildings, a helicopter landing area, a mooring dock and extensive planted areas with tree species from different parts of the world.
A Greek shipping tycoon acquired the island in the mid-1960s and transformed the barren landscape into a Mediterranean planted retreat. After his death the island changed owners several times and has belonged to a Russian entrepreneur since the early 2010s.
The island takes its name from the constellation Scorpius and became known worldwide after a Greek shipping tycoon married an American presidential widow here. Many still remember the chapel on the highest point where this ceremony took place and which visitors can still see today from the water.
Access to the island is tightly restricted and possible only through private sailboat charters or by express invitation from the current owners. Those wanting to explore the surroundings will find good views of the coastline from neighboring public waters.
Part of the island served as the final resting place for the former owner and his son before both were later moved to another location. The current owner plans to convert the estate into an exclusive resort that will be open to only a few guests.
