Kleisoura Monastery

Kleisoura Monastery stands on elevated ground in the Kastoria region and displays stone walls along with traditional Orthodox architectural features. The complex consists of several connected structures with a church at its center and residential or storage areas arranged around it.

The monastery was founded during a time when Orthodox communities flourished in West Macedonia and developed over centuries into an important religious center. During World War II, it provided shelter to local residents escaping the chaos of war.

The monastery houses religious artifacts and iconographic works that reflect Eastern Orthodox tradition in the West Macedonia region. Pilgrims and visitors can experience here the long connection between spiritual life and local heritage.

Access is via the main road from Kastoria to Kleisoura village with parking available near the entrance. Visitors should bring comfortable footwear since the terrain is hilly and must be explored on foot.

The monastery features handcrafted details and decorative elements carved into stone that showcase the artistic skills of earlier generations. These subtle features are easy to overlook but provide insight into local craftsmanship traditions.
