Petraki Monastery, Byzantine monastery in Kolonaki, Athens, Greece
Petraki Monastery is a Byzantine monastery in Kolonaki featuring a four-aisled church topped with an octagonal dome. The dome rests on ancient columns that display the classical Byzantine design principles.
Originally called Koukopoule, the monastery received its present name in 1673 when monk Parthenios Petrakis funded major renovations. This transformation established it as an important religious center.
The monastery serves as the seat of the Church of Greece's highest authority and houses the tomb of a significant Orthodox leader. Visitors experience a space that remains central to religious decisions and spiritual life today.
Daily services take place early in the morning, and the complex is actively used for worship during these times. Respectful dress is expected, and it helps to check opening hours in advance when planning a visit.
The monastery donated substantial property to help establish several major institutions that shaped modern Athens. This generosity made it a key contributor to the city's cultural and educational development.
