Southern Finland Province

Southern Finland Province was an administrative region in the southern part of the country that brought together several historical territories. The area combined coastal regions, inland areas, and mixed urban and rural communities across the landscape.

The region was established in 1997 through the merger of earlier administrative units and continued until 2010. During these years it represented a transitional period in how Finland organized its regional government.

The provincial coat of arms incorporated designs from Tavastia, Karelia, and Uusimaa regions, representing the distinct territorial heritage of these historical areas.

The area was served by several administrative centers that could help residents and visitors with official matters. To explore the different parts, traveling by car or train works well, with the larger cities serving as good starting points for visits.

The province bordered both the Gulf of Finland and Russia, containing 72 municipalities with a population density of 64 people per square kilometer.
