Kyminlinna, Military fortification in Kotka, Finland
Kyminlinna is a military fortress on Hovinsaari island near Kotka, spanning roughly 74 hectares with a diameter of about 800 meters. The site contains 23 buildings and features incomplete moats that function as a drainage system across the grounds.
General Alexander Suvorov oversaw construction of the initial bastion fortress between 1791 and 1795 as part of a southeastern fortification system for Finland. The project arose during a period when Russia was expanding its military network across the region.
The fortress displays Russian military engineering approaches from the late 1700s, visible in how its five bastions and walls are arranged. Visitors can see how these defensive designs shaped the overall layout and appearance of the site today.
The site was transferred from the Finnish Defence Forces to Senate Properties, the government real estate company, in 2005 and has been open to visitors since then. The island is walkable, though a railway line and road cross through the property, which affects movement around the grounds.
A pond sits within the fortress perimeter, a natural water feature integrated into what was once a strict military structure. This unexpected water feature provides an interesting contrast to the site's defensive purpose.
