Tähtitorninvuori, park in Helsinki, Finland
Tähtitorninvuori is a hill that rises about 100 feet (30 meters) above the surrounding area next to the South harbour in the Ullanlinna district. Its winding paths pass through diverse trees and shrubs, with views stretching across the city and out to islands in the bay.
Signal fires once burned on this hill in the 1600s to communicate messages along the coast. A small fortress called Ulrikasborg stood here in the 1700s before the hill was repurposed as a public park in the 1800s.
The hill takes its name from the old observatory that has stood on its summit for nearly two centuries. The park today serves as a beloved gathering place where locals and visitors find quiet moments away from the busy streets.
The park is easily accessible by public transport or on foot from the city center. Wear sturdy shoes since the paths are uneven and wind through varied terrain.
A large poplar tree with a trunk as wide as a small car grows on the hill and can be seen from far across the city. Despite its impressive size, this ancient tree shows signs of age and requires careful maintenance.
