Salpausselkä, Terminal moraine system in Southern Finland.
Salpausselkä is a terminal moraine system extending 500 kilometers across Southern Finland from southwest to east. The ridges reach heights of 80 meters in certain sections and consist of sedimentary rock formations.
The formation emerged during the Younger Dryas period around 12,250 years ago, marking the edge of the Baltic ice lake as glaciers retreated. This geological event created the ridge system that remains visible today.
The ridge shaped how people settled in Finland by creating natural pathways where railways and highways now run. Visitors can observe how geography influenced the placement of these routes across the landscape.
Multiple marked hiking trails traverse the ridge system, allowing visitors to explore the geological formations up close. These trails provide good views of surrounding lakes and forests, making sturdy footwear advisable for walking the terrain.
The ridge acts as a natural barrier that contains Finland's central lake system, directing water flow through specific channels toward the Gulf of Finland. This hydrological role often goes unnoticed by visitors exploring the area.
