Siilinjärvi, Municipality in Northern Savonia, Finland.
This municipality north of Kuopio encompasses 507 square kilometers of land, including 123 lakes with Kallavesi and Juurusvesi-Akonvesi among the largest bodies of water.
Established in 1925, Siilinjärvi developed from an agricultural region into a modern administrative center with a population reaching over 21,000 residents by 2015.
The municipality maintains educational facilities comprising eleven elementary schools and two secondary institutions, supporting the Finnish-speaking population's academic development.
The Koti Airport in Rissala serves as a transportation center, while the Yara International apatite mine and factory provide substantial employment opportunities.
The name originates from a Sámi word meaning winter dwelling, although its current Finnish form translates to Hedgehog's Lake in the local language.
