Siilinjärvi

Siilinjärvi is a municipality in North Savo, located north of Kuopio in Finland. The region features numerous lakes scattered across the land, with Kallavesi and Juurusvesi-Akonvesi being the most prominent water bodies that shape the landscape.

The municipality was established in 1925, emerging from an agricultural region. It transformed into a modern center over the following decades through economic changes and industrial development.

The municipality maintains educational facilities comprising eleven elementary schools and two secondary institutions, supporting the Finnish-speaking population's academic development.

Koti Airport in Rissala serves as the main transportation hub for the area. A major phosphate mine and its associated factory are central to the local economy and provide employment for many residents.

The name comes from a Sámi word meaning winter dwelling, though its current Finnish form translates to something quite different. This linguistic connection reveals older inhabitants of the region and their lasting mark on place names.
