Runeberg museum, Artist's-home museum in Porvoo, Finland.
The Runeberg Museum is an artist's home in Porvoo displaying the preserved residence of Finland's national poet Johan Ludvig Runeberg with original furnishings, personal belongings, manuscripts, and letters. The rooms retain their 19th-century character and offer insight into the daily world of the poet and his family.
Built in 1845, the house served as the residence of Johan Ludvig Runeberg and his wife Fredrika until their deaths. It became Finland's first home museum when it opened to the public in 1882.
The collection includes hunting weapons, kitchenware, and houseplants with lineage to Fredrika Runeberg's own specimens, offering a window into everyday 19th-century Finnish family life. These objects show what people owned and used daily at home.
It is best visited Wednesday through Sunday during winter and daily in summer, with adult entry at approximately 8 euros. Group tours can be arranged in advance by contacting the museum.
The museum maintains living houseplants that directly descend from specimens cultivated by Fredrika Runeberg during the 19th century. These plants create a living connection between visitors and the household's past.
