Ohtakari, Protected islet in Kokkola, Finland
Ohtakari is an islet at the tip of the Lohtaja Vattaja peninsula in the Gulf of Bothnia with a lighthouse, a lookout tower, and a fishing harbor. The place holds a guest marina, a summer cafe, and about fifty holiday cottages accessible via a causeway from the mainland.
Tax documents from the 16th century record fishermen who worked and stayed on the islet during peak seasons in the gulf. Over the centuries this grew into a settled community with harbor facilities and seasonal dwellings.
The fishing museum displays tools and gear from generations of work on the water and documents how families cast nets and processed their catch. Visitors can follow the daily routines of those who made a living from the sea through exhibits that show actual equipment and techniques.
The causeway allows car access and provides parking near the harbor and lodging areas. A barbecue shelter stands open for visitors who wish to picnic or rest on the islet.
A traditional turf maze called Troy Town sits on the islet and draws visitors who follow its winding path. The neighboring Vattaja holds the longest continuous sandy beach system in northern Europe with dunes and shallow water.
