Elving Tower, Observation tower in Kouvola, Finland.
Elving Tower is an observation tower near Kouvola with an octagonal shape made of cement brick. From its viewing platform over 20 meters high, it offers wide views across the Kymenlaakso landscape.
Rudolf Elving had the tower built between 1905 and 1907 to monitor forests and detect fires early. During World War II it served as an air observation post, then fell into disrepair before local groups restored it in the 1990s.
The tower bears the name of its builder Rudolf Elving and reflects the craftsmanship traditions of the early 1900s. Visitors can observe the solid cement brick construction that was typical of that era.
Visitors should know the tower is open seasonally from May through September and accessible via Kasperintie 1 in Valkeala. The site has wheelchair facilities and is equipped for strollers.
The octagonal shape was a deliberate construction choice that provided a stable structure with good visibility from all directions. This geometric solution was typical for surveillance towers of that era.
