Sompio Strict Nature Reserve, Protected nature reserve in Sodankylä, Finland.
Sompio Strict Nature Reserve is a protected forest area in northern Finland that contains woodlands, wetlands, and hills. The Nattastunturit Mountains form the most visible feature at the heart of the reserve.
It was established in 1956 to protect the original landscape before a major dam changed northern Lapland. This action helped preserve a section of wild nature that might otherwise have been lost.
The name comes from an old Sámi settlement that once stood here, and reindeer herding continues to shape how the land is used today. You can see signs of this traditional way of life as you walk through the reserve.
Visitors must stay on two marked trails that lead to different peaks in the area. The ground can be wet and uneven, so wear sturdy footwear and take your time while walking.
The reserve has a lake where visitors can camp, and it serves as the only place to launch canoes into the surrounding wild areas. Many people use it as a starting point for longer paddling journeys through remote landscapes.
