Umag

Umag is a coastal town on the northwestern Adriatic shore in Istria with over 40 kilometers of coastline and several sandy beaches. The center combines historic architecture with modern harbor facilities and a wide waterfront promenade.

Roman settlements left traces along the coast dating back to around the 7th century. Later, Venetian rule shaped the town for many centuries afterward.

The old town displays Venetian influences through its narrow lanes and stone buildings, which shape the daily landscape today. Visitors notice these marks of past rule everywhere in the architecture of the central quarters.

The beach is easily reached on foot from the town center, with several marked paths leading to the waterfront. The area has sufficient parking and is wheelchair accessible, so visitors of all abilities can explore the location.

Every July, a major tennis tournament on clay courts takes place here, attracting professional players from around the world. The event has established itself over decades as an important date on the international sports calendar.
