Telašćica, Nature park in Dugi Otok, Croatia
Telašćica is a nature reserve on Dugi Otok featuring steep cliffs, eight sheltered coves, and thick Mediterranean brush covering the landscape. Inside the park lies a salt lake with water much saltier than the surrounding sea.
The area gained protected status in 1980 and was formally designated as a nature park in 1988. These steps were taken to safeguard the fragile landscape and its ecological systems.
The fishing communities here maintain traditional practices passed down through generations. You can see these habits reflected in daily activities throughout the settlements nestled along the coast.
Spring and autumn offer the most comfortable conditions for exploring, with pleasant temperatures and fewer crowds. Bring water and sun protection, as trails are exposed and there are few shaded rest areas along the paths.
The salt lake inside stays at the same temperature year-round while being three times saltier than the Adriatic Sea outside. This unusual chemistry developed over thousands of years and creates a rare natural wonder.
