Dubrovnik Ruđer Bošković Airport, International airport in Čilipi, Croatia
Dubrovnik Ruđer Bošković Airport sits in the municipality of Čilipi near the coast and operates a paved runway that can accommodate aircraft of all sizes. The terminal buildings spread across a compact site, bringing together arrival and departure halls, shops, restaurants, and car rental desks in several connected zones.
The airport opened in 1962, replacing the earlier Gruda airfield that had served as a summer runway since 1936. Over the following decades, the facility received several expansions, including new passenger halls and extended runways to handle growing traffic for the southern Croatian region.
The facility received its name in 2023 to honor Ruđer Josip Bošković, an 18th-century Croatian scientist who made contributions to physics and astronomy.
Shuttle buses run regularly between the terminals and Dubrovnik Old Town, coordinating with flight arrival and departure times. It helps to plan enough time for security checks, especially on summer weekends when many travelers arrive at once.
The facility has carried the name of Croatian scientist Ruđer Josip Bošković since 2023, honoring his work in physics and astronomy during the eighteenth century. The site uses flat terrain between hills and sea, offering views of the Dalmatian coast during takeoff or approach when skies are clear.
