Our Lady of Angels

Our Lady of Angels is a Franciscan monastery in Orebić perched on a cliff about 152 meters above sea level and surrounded by pine forest. It overlooks the Pelješac channel and Korčula island, with a church featuring a bell tower.

The monastery was built in the late 15th century, combining Gothic and Renaissance architectural styles from that period. Its hilltop location above the sea made it an important landmark for maritime travel at the time.

The cemetery here holds graves of numerous ship captains from the region, showing the deep bond between maritime tradition and religious life. These resting places tell of how important seafaring was to the local community.

The path up leads along marked trails that wind through forest and gradually gain elevation. Visitors can observe regular religious ceremonies in the church, so plan to arrive early in the day.

Ships passing below traditionally sound their horns three times, and the monks respond by ringing the church bells. This ritual connects seafarers with the spiritual life of the place.
