Our Lady of Loreto monument, Religious monument in Primošten, Croatia
Our Lady of Loreto monument stands on Gaj Hill and is constructed from concrete with an outer coating of gold, silver, and colored glass mosaics alongside mirrored surfaces. The hollow structure houses a small wooden chapel inside where visitors can leave coins and written prayers.
The monument was made in Zagreb and assembled on Gaj Hill between 3 April and 1 May 2017; it was inaugurated at 11 a.m. on 6 May 2017, four days before Primošten's local feast day. The mayor of Primošten and a delegation from Loreto attended, and the Holy See and Pope Francis gave their blessing to the project.
The monument's mosaic is divided into seven parts, six of them rings on the cone. The second ring shows the tree of life with the monogram AM for Ave Maria, the third two hearts, the fourth the birth of Jesus, the fifth irregular geometric shapes, and the sixth the mystic rose with olive trees. The seventh part is the Black Madonna and Child, whose face was carved by sculptor Nikola Vudrag after a Donatello model.
The monument stands on Gaj Hill, about 170 m above sea level and roughly two kilometres south of Primošten's historic centre. A car park, toilets, and the Madonna Bar & Shop are beside it. The hollow concrete interior holds a chapel in the lower part.
The statue was made in Zagreb and brought to Primošten in 2017; assembly began on 3 April and ended on 1 May, and it was unveiled at 11 a.m. on 6 May, four days before the town's feast of its patron saint. The face of the Madonna was carved by sculptor Nikola Vudrag after Donatello's model.
