Our Lady of Loreto monument, Religious monument in Primošten, Croatia
Our Lady of Loreto monument stands on Gaj Hill and is constructed from concrete with an outer coating of gold, silver, and colored glass mosaics alongside mirrored surfaces. The hollow structure houses a small wooden chapel inside where visitors can leave coins and written prayers.
The monument was completed and inaugurated on Gaj Hill in 2017, following a long planning period that traces back to the mid-19th century. The original idea was realized over more than a hundred years later through the current concrete structure.
The statue incorporates seven rings with religious motifs, including the tree of life and depictions of Jesus Christ and Mary with black faces representing modesty.
Access to the chapel inside occurs through the base of the monument, where visitors find dry conditions to leave their prayers and coins. The best time to visit is in the morning or early evening when the reflective exterior surface is most visible in the sun.
Visitors deposit prayer notes through slits at the base of the monument, creating an ever-changing collection of personal written messages. This practice has turned it into a place where private thoughts and wishes from visitors are stored and kept.
