Siklós Castle

Siklós Castle is a medieval fortress perched on a low hill with walls arranged in multiple defensive rings around a central tower. The structure shows Gothic features and contains rooms displaying objects from different time periods.

The fortress first appears in written records in 1294 when it belonged to Comes Siklósi Gyula. Over the centuries that followed, it underwent many rebuilding phases, absorbing architectural styles from different eras.

Dorothy Kanizsai founded an educational center here where noblewomen from across Europe came to study. The castle served as a place where knowledge and ideas were shared among women of different regions.

The castle operates as a museum open daily with guided tours available for visitors. Most people spend one to two hours exploring the rooms and viewing the displayed collections at their own pace.

King Sigismund of Hungary was imprisoned here for five months in 1401 after rebellious nobles rose against his rule. This episode reveals how the fortress served as a place of confinement even for royalty.
