Gorsium/Herculia, Archaeological site and open-air museum in Tác, Hungary
Gorsium/Herculia is an excavated Roman settlement with visible street layouts, defensive walls, and building foundations spread across an open site. The remains span multiple periods and reveal how the place grew and changed over time.
The site started as a Roman military camp and developed into a settlement around 103 CE called Gorsium. Later it was renamed Herculia and became the administrative center of the Lower Pannonia province.
The place was an important administrative hub in ancient times with its own daily activities and social life. Visitors walking through can sense how people once gathered and moved through these spaces.
The site is open on regular days and offers marked pathways connecting different areas. Wear comfortable shoes since you will walk across open ground to explore the various sections.
The site contains a well-preserved ancient theater structure where performances are occasionally held to recreate how Romans performed music long ago. These events bring the ruins to life at certain times of year.
