Makói Termál- és Gyógyfürdő, Thermal bath and spa in Makó, Hungary
Makói Termál- és Gyógyfürdő is a large spa complex near the center of Makó, with indoor and outdoor pools, saunas, and treatment rooms. The main buildings have curved, organic shapes made of wood and light materials, with a striking entrance crowned by two tall towers and a glass dome.
Warm mineral water was found here in 1956 after deep drilling, and a simple public pool was first built in a courtyard for local health needs. The spa grew slowly, then expanded after the change of political system, when leisure areas were added and Imre Makovecz designed most of the current buildings.
The sauna area uses natural materials and traditional heating methods, giving each room a distinct feel tied to local bathing customs. Visitors can see how the curved wooden details and soft light echo the folk building traditions of the region.
The complex is easy to explore on foot, with clear paths leading between the pool areas, sauna section, and relaxation spaces. Expect some areas to be busier in summer, so arriving early in the day makes the visit more comfortable.
During construction in 2009, a fire damaged the domes and delayed the work, but the complex was still completed after Makovecz’s death in 2011. One of the most photographed details is the onion-shaped dome, which directly references a local vegetable symbol of Makó.
