Lismore Castle, Victorian castle and art gallery in County Waterford, Ireland
Lismore Castle is a Victorian fortress and art gallery in County Waterford that stands on a hill above the Blackwater River. Tall towers, pointed Gothic windows and battlements shape its appearance, while formal gardens with pathways and sculptures surround the site.
The site was fortified from 1185 under Prince John of England, after a monastery already stood here in the 7th century. Later rebuilding in the 19th century gave the castle its current Victorian appearance with neo-Gothic elements.
The estate takes its name from the historic town of Lismore and fits into the tradition of grand country houses along the Blackwater. Visitors see works by contemporary artists displayed in historic rooms, showing the dialogue between old architecture and new creativity.
The west wing with the gallery can be visited during opening hours, while the rest of the building is reserved for private stays. The gardens are accessible on foot and offer level paths between the different sections.
The residence has housed occupants continuously since its founding and today belongs to the family of the Duke of Devonshire. Within the walls stands equipment for modern events, including a cinema room with contemporary technology.
