Castle Saunderson, Medieval fortress and international scout center in Belturbet, Ireland

Castle Saunderson is a stone fortress near the Finn River in County Cavan featuring Gothic architectural details and multiple towers. Next to the main structure sits a church containing a family burial vault, and the surrounding grounds include woodlands with trails and informational signs.

The fortress was built in the 14th century as a stronghold of the O'Reilly clan and later came under the control of the Saunderson family during the Ulster plantations. This transfer of ownership brought significant changes to how the place was used and defended.

The site functions as an international scout center where young people from around the world participate in outdoor programs together. Through shared activities on the grounds, visitors experience how the place brings different cultures into contact with each other.

The site offers walking trails through wooded grounds that are wheelchair accessible with informational panels throughout. Visitors should wear comfortable shoes and allow time to explore the full extent of the grounds at a relaxed pace.

A dramatic military event took place here in 1689 when soldiers perished in the Finn River during a retreat from the fortification. This tragic incident remains part of the site's remembered history and gives it a layer of significance visitors often discover.
