Negev

The Negev is a desert region in southern Israel that stretches across wide expanses of arid terrain with different geological formations. The landscape shifts between rocky plateaus, sandy plains, and deep erosion craters formed through thousands of years of natural processes.

Archaeological findings confirm settlements from the Neolithic period, with the Nabataeans establishing major trade centers starting in the 3rd century BCE. Later Byzantine and Ottoman rule shaped the region before modern development began in the 20th century.

Bedouin communities have inhabited parts of this desert for centuries and continue to practice traditional forms of nomadic life and hospitality. Visitors can encounter handcrafted jewelry and woven textiles at markets that showcase local craftsmanship.

Most areas are accessible by car, with marked hiking trails leading to points of interest. Water and sun protection are essential, as temperatures during summer months can become very high.

Some wadis fill with water suddenly after rare rainfalls and transform into flowing streams for brief periods. These temporary waterways attract wildlife and allow short bursts of plant growth in the otherwise barren surroundings.
