Maheshwar, Madhya Pradesh, Historical temple town on Narmada River banks in Khargone district, India

Maheshwar is a town on the banks of the Narmada in Madhya Pradesh, rising in several levels above the river. Stone steps lead down from temples to the water, while narrow residential quarters spread behind the riverside structures and ghats line the waterfront.

Queen Ahilya Devi Holkar ruled the kingdom of Malwa from here in the 18th century and commissioned many buildings. Under her reign the town became an important pilgrimage center on the river, drawing travelers from across central India.

Weavers continue to produce Maheshwari saris on wooden handlooms, using silk and cotton threads in patterns passed through families for generations. The workshops line narrow lanes where you can hear the steady rhythm of shuttle and frame, and finished textiles hang drying on rooftops under the sun.

The town lies around 90 kilometers from Indore, which has an airport and bus links to larger cities in the region. Visitors find shade along the ghats, while the stone steps can become slippery in heat and sturdy footwear proves helpful.

The Sahasrarjun Temple holds eleven burning oil lamps, meant to represent the mythological image of the multi-headed demon king. This arrangement recalls stories in which a divine figure is described with ten heads and one raised hand.
