Wankhede Stadium, Cricket field in Churchgate, Mumbai, India
Wankhede Stadium is a cricket ground in Churchgate near Marine Drive that rises 29 meters (95 feet) high and holds 33,108 seats. Suspended cantilever roofs cover the tiers without support beams, giving clear views from every seat.
Construction began in 1974 after disputes between the Cricket Club of India and the Mumbai Cricket Association over ticket allocation for matches at Brabourne Stadium. The completed ground was named after politician S. K. Wankhede, who held a leadership role in Indian cricket administration at the time.
Seven sections of the ground carry names of well-known cricket players, including dedicated stands for Sunil Gavaskar and Sachin Tendulkar. During important matches, supporters fill the tiers with flags and songs, while vendors move through the aisles selling snacks and drinks.
Bucket seats fill every section, and multiple food courts serve refreshments during matches. Following renovations for the 2011 World Cup, restroom facilities and entry pathways were upgraded throughout the ground.
The playing surface contains local red soil that creates extra bounce and makes the ball behave differently than on other grounds. Proximity to the Arabian Sea affects how the ball moves through the air, especially during morning sessions when moisture drifts over the field.
