Idukki Dam, Arch dam in Kerala, India.
Idukki Dam is a dam in Idukki district, Kerala, India. The concrete structure curves in two directions and fits between granite hills that hold back the Periyar River.
Construction began in 1969 and took seven years to complete. Canadian engineers worked with Indian teams to build the facility.
Multiple communities in Kerala depend on this water infrastructure for their agricultural practices, electricity needs, and daily water requirements.
Visitors can view the facility most days between 10 AM and 5 PM. Access is managed by the Kerala State Electricity Board and may close during maintenance work.
The facility supplies roughly 40 percent of Kerala's electricity through hydropower. Two nearby hills, Kuravan and Kurathi, form the natural anchors for the curved structure.
