Tihar Jail, Maximum security prison complex in New Delhi, India
Tihar Jail is a correctional facility made up of nine separate prisons operating under a single administration. The complex covers a large area in the western part of the capital and forms the largest detention system in the country.
The facility was built in the mid-fifties as a regional detention center and passed into the capital administration a few years later. Since then it has grown through continuous expansion into the largest correctional complex in the nation.
The prison operates an internal radio station and facilitates music therapy sessions, concerts, and artistic programs for the rehabilitation of inmates.
The grounds are located in the Janakpuri neighborhood in western New Delhi, a few kilometers from the village of the same name. The complex is not open to the public and can only be viewed from outside to a limited extent.
Within the walls the administration runs workshops where inmates produce goods under their own brand and learn practical skills in the process. This manufacturing program has existed since the early sixties and offers a form of vocational preparation.
