The Gangotri Glacier is a traditional Hindu pilgrimage site and one of the primary sources of the Ganges River.
It has been receding since 1780, with scientists attributing this to global warming.
The glacier is named after Goddess Ganga, considered sacred by Hindus and believed to be the physical embodiment of the river Ganges.
