Khandwa is a city in Khandwa district, located in the Nimar region of central Madhya Pradesh state. The settlement sits at an elevation of 309 meters (1014 feet) and serves as a rail junction linking the Jabalpur and Bhusaval sections.
Archaeological finds near the tributaries of the Narmada River show evidence of human settlement dating back to the Paleolithic period. Over the centuries the city grew into a crossroads connecting different parts of central India.
