Visakhapatnam International Airport, International airport in Visakhapatnam, India
Visakhapatnam International Airport is an international aerodrome serving the coastal city of Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh state. The terminal building rises through two levels, housing arrival and departure areas with counters and waiting zones for travelers.
The facility opened to civilian travelers in 1981 after serving solely as a military airfield for decades. The runway underwent extension over the years, enabling international operations to begin in 2007.
The name INS Dega comes from the Telugu language, where it refers to a large eagle, connecting the naval base to the region's linguistic roots. This link between military heritage and local vocabulary reflects how the airfield serves both defense and civilian travel within a shared space.
Travelers can choose between parking options for cars and motorcycles located directly at the terminal building. Check-in counters are found on the ground floor and handle departures to major Indian cities and select international destinations.
The grounds function as a civil enclave within the naval base INS Dega, allowing passenger planes and military craft to share the same runway. This dual use means travelers can sometimes see naval helicopters or patrol aircraft alongside commercial jets.
