Bibhutibhushan Wildlife Sanctuary

Bibhutibhushan Wildlife Sanctuary, Wildlife sanctuary in North 24 Parganas district, India

Description

Bibhutibhushan Wildlife Sanctuary is a 92 hectare refuge along the Ichamati River surrounded by forest, home to spotted deer and numerous bird species. The area forms a green stretch where visitors can watch wildlife in their natural setting.

History

The sanctuary started in 1965 when four spotted deer from Alipore Zoo were brought there. Over the following decades the deer population grew substantially, but a major flood in 2000 significantly affected the reserve.

Culture

The sanctuary is named after Bengali author Bibhutibhushan Bandyopadhyay, whose writing was shaped by this region's natural world. This link between literature and the land shows why the place matters to Bengal's cultural identity.

Practical

The sanctuary is reached via train stations at Bongaon or Ranaghat, followed by bus travel to Naldugri station. Visitors planning a trip should check which routes are available before setting out.

Did you know?

The sanctuary holds deer feeding sessions twice daily at 9 AM and 4 PM, allowing visitors to watch the animals up close during these times. These scheduled moments offer a rare chance to see the deer's natural behavior in a manageable way.
