Bishop Falls

Bishop Falls is a three-tiered waterfall in Shillong that drops 135 meters through the highland gorges of Meghalaya. The cascades form white water ribbons as they plunge down dark rock faces, creating layers of falling water across the entire descent.

This waterfall received its name during the British colonial period when settlers were mapping the region. The naming reflected the era when European influences shaped the places and landmarks of India.

Local residents of Shillong gather at Bishop Falls for traditional family gatherings and celebrations throughout the dry season.

You can reach the viewing platform by taking a narrow road from Mawlai that leads to an observation point overlooking the deep gorge. Paths can be slippery, especially during the rainy season, so wear sturdy shoes and take your time.

A hydroelectric power station sits at the base of this waterfall, converting the water force into electricity for nearby communities. This practical use shows how the natural wonder also functions as an energy source.
