Dibang Wildlife Sanctuary, Wildlife sanctuary in Dibang Valley, India

Dibang Wildlife Sanctuary is a protected area in the Dibang Valley that covers mountainous terrain with thick forest cover. The vegetation shifts from tropical zones in the valleys to open meadows at higher elevations, providing habitat for various animal and plant species.

The area became a protected reserve in 1992 when the government established it to safeguard endangered animal species and natural habitats in the eastern Himalayas. This action was part of broader efforts to secure the biodiversity of this mountainous region.

The Idu Mishmi people who live near the sanctuary practice forest stewardship methods learned from their ancestors. Their approach to the land reflects a deep connection between their community and the surrounding woods.

The best time to visit is between October and April when the weather is most stable for mountain trails and forest walks. The nearest starting points are Tezu and Roing, from where exploration of the area can begin.

The sanctuary is home to two flying squirrel species found nowhere else in the world: the Mechuka giant flying squirrel and the Mishmi Hills giant flying squirrel. These rare mammals remain largely unknown and receive little scientific attention.
