Ghanta Ghar

Ghanta Ghar stands above Sardar Market with five tiers of sandstone topped by a distinctive domed cupola. The structure blends traditional Indian stone balconies with European architectural elements and sits within an octagonal stone fence.

Maharaja Sardar Singh commissioned this clock tower in 1910, importing the timepiece mechanism from the same manufacturer that supplied London's clock towers. This choice reflected the ruler's desire to bring modern Western technology to his city.

The clock tower marks the gateway to Old Jodhpur and serves as a central gathering place where merchants sell textiles, spices, and local crafts.

The clock tower sits in the heart of the old market district and is easily accessible on foot if you are near the city center. The best time to visit is late afternoon when crowds thin and light conditions improve for photography.

The clock still runs today and its bell chimes mark the rhythm of the surrounding market. Many vendors organize their business hours and daily routines around the bell strikes, keeping the tower an active part of everyday life.
