Maniktala, Residential district in northern Kolkata, India
Maniktala is a neighborhood in northern Kolkata, spread across several municipal wards and centered on the main road of Satin Sen Sarani. The area mixes housing and shops, and it is home to one of the city's largest markets for fresh produce and seafood, as well as schools and the Central Blood Bank.
The area became part of the East Suburban Municipality in 1889 and was later absorbed into the Kolkata Municipal Corporation under the Calcutta Municipal Act of 1923. This change in administration shaped how the neighborhood grew and changed over the following decades.
At the crossing of Vivekananda Road and Acharya Prafulla Chandra Road, people from different communities meet daily for shopping and celebrations. This busy junction shows how different groups share the same spaces and keep their own traditions alive side by side.
The neighborhood is best explored on foot, since the narrow lanes slow the pace and most points of interest are close to each other. Going to the market in the early morning gives you the best choice of produce and more room to move around.
Near the Maniktala crossing stands the tomb of Manik Pir, a Muslim saint who some believe gave the neighborhood its name. This small shrine draws people who are curious about where the name actually comes from.
