Nrityagram, intentional community in India
Nrityagram is a dance community in India located about 35 kilometers from a major city and 5 kilometers from Hessaraghatta village. The campus features traditional-style buildings constructed from local materials set within open courtyards and gardens surrounded by fields and trees.
The community was founded decades ago with the goal of preserving traditional dance forms and creating a dedicated space for their practice. Over the years it has grown into a well-known destination that attracts dancers and artists from across India and internationally.
The name Nrityagram comes from Sanskrit and translates to "dance village". Here, dance is woven into daily life, with performers and teachers sharing their craft in open spaces and studios, creating a working community where this art form guides how people spend their days.
Visitors can access the site Friday through Sunday from 10 am to 2 pm, with dance classes beginning at 10:30 am and extending to 1 pm on Sundays. Self-guided tours are available where you can walk freely around the campus to watch rehearsals and classes at your own pace.
The community teaches around 100 children and young adults through daily classes, blending education with artistic practice in a living model. Virtual tours are available online, allowing people worldwide to explore the campus and see the dancers at work from their homes.
