Prasanna Venkatesa Perumal Temple, Saidapet, Hindu temple in Saidapet, Chennai, India
Prasanna Venkatesa Perumal Temple is a Hindu temple in Saidapet, Chennai, Tamil Nadu, dedicated to the deity Prasanna Venkata Narasimha, who is worshipped alongside Sridevi and Bhudevi in the east-facing inner sanctum. The complex is made up of several shrines and halls arranged around the central sanctuary, with carved stone detailing on the walls and towers.
The temple dates to the 12th century, built during the Vijayanagara Empire, and its architecture follows the style of that period with stepped towers and carved facades. Later additions reflect different phases of Vijayanagara rule, giving the complex a layered appearance.
The temple was built by the Balija Chetty community, a merchant group who made it a center of their religious life. Visitors today can observe daily rituals and, during festivals, see the courtyard fill with worshippers from this community.
The temple opens in the early morning and closes in the evening, with a midday break. Visitors should keep shoulders and knees covered, and those planning to visit during the annual festival should expect the grounds to be busier than on regular days.
The hall now called Ramanuja Koodam was completed in 1901 under the name Ramanuja Vijaya Vilasam, making it one of the newer parts of the complex. It still serves as a meeting space where community events and gatherings take place alongside regular worship.
