Vaduvoor Bird Sanctuary

Vaduvoor Bird Sanctuary spreads across about 128 hectares around an irrigation tank and offers habitats for resident and migratory birds throughout the year. The area is crisscrossed with viewing points and pathways that allow visitors to reach different spots for observation.

The sanctuary was established in 1999 by the Tamil Nadu government, transforming an existing irrigation tank into a protected area for various bird species. This conversion marked the beginning of a systematic effort to safeguard the resident and migrating populations in this region.

The sanctuary is deeply woven into the lives of local farmers who have managed these waters for generations and benefit from the birds that naturally enrich their fields. This relationship shapes how the place functions and shows how nature and farming can thrive together.

Visitors can use two observation towers and rent bicycles to explore the area and watch birds from different vantage points. The site is generally easy to reach, and bird watching yields better results in early morning or late afternoon hours.

Between October and February, tens of thousands of birds from multiple continents arrive, including white ibis, painted storks, and grey pelicans. This seasonal event temporarily transforms the area into a bustling hub of global bird migration.
