PhonePe, Financial services company in Bangalore, India
PhonePe operates a payment platform that handles money transfers, bill settlements, and investments through a mobile application. The interface works in Hindi, English, and nine additional regional languages spoken across different Indian states.
Three entrepreneurs started the platform in late 2015 in Bangalore and sold it to Flipkart months later. The government launched a nationwide digital payment system around the same time, allowing the new company to grow rapidly.
The app supports payments in multiple Indian languages, allowing people across the country to handle banking in their native tongue. This linguistic opening has made digital payments accessible to millions of Indians who were previously excluded from formal financial systems.
Users can send money to friends, pay electricity bills, recharge mobile credit, or put small amounts into investment funds. All functions run through the same application, so no separate apps are needed for different banking tasks.
The platform handles more than 100 million transactions every day, making it the most used digital payment interface in the country. This scale roughly equals the population of Germany making a payment each day.
