Ancient mound in Bharatpur

The Ancient Mound in Bharatpur is a Buddhist stupa built with two different sizes of bricks and lined with niches along its outer walls. The structure shows careful brick construction that has survived through the ages.

The stupa was built between the 7th and 9th centuries when Buddhism held strong influence in Bengal. Earlier settlement at the site extends back thousands of years into prehistory.

The stupa's exterior niches once held religious sculptures that drew devotees to this sacred place. These architectural features reveal how people practiced their faith within this community centuries ago.

The site sits on the north bank of the Damodar River near Panagarh and has information boards explaining its significance. Wear sturdy footwear since the ground can be uneven and bring sun protection for outdoor exploration.

Excavations between 1971 and 1975 uncovered black and red pottery along with carved bone tools over 3700 years old. These discoveries show this was one of the region's earliest farming settlements.
