Yazd, Provincial capital in central Iran
Yazd is the capital of its namesake province in central Iran and sits on a desert plain between two mountain ranges. The built area extends from the historic old town core with its winding lanes to modern neighborhoods at the city edges.
The city was founded in the 3rd century and developed into a trade hub along the Silk Road. Under the rule of different dynasties it remained a center of textile production for centuries.
The old town shows clay brick houses whose narrow lanes provide shade and form cool passages. Residents use their house courtyards as private retreats, while rooftops serve as sleeping spaces during summer months.
The old town is best explored on foot, as many lanes are too narrow for vehicles. Those wanting to visit the surrounding area will find taxi drivers and local travel agencies near the large squares.
An underground network of water channels has supplied the city with water from distant mountains for over a thousand years. These tunnels often run several kilometers below the surface and are accessible through regular shafts for maintenance work.
