Kish Island, Resort island in Bandar Lengeh County, Iran
Kish Island is a resort island in the Persian Gulf within Bandar Lengeh County in southern Iran. The island stretches across flat terrain with sandy beaches along the coastline and reaches its highest point at roughly 45 meters (148 feet) above sea level.
The island functioned as an important trading post during the era of ancient Persia and was already noted in Greek travel accounts in the year 325 BC. Over the centuries power shifted several times between regional rulers and European powers.
The name comes from ancient Persian language and appears in old manuscripts with several spelling variations. Today both traditional Iranian customs and international exchange shape how residents and visitors experience daily life within the free trade zone.
Kish International Airport connects the island with several Iranian cities and enables flights to neighboring countries throughout the year. Visitors do not need prior authorization upon arrival and can apply for a visa directly at the airport.
On the southwest coast lies the permanently beached wreck of a Greek cargo ship from the seventies on the shore. This vessel was simply abandoned on site after a breakdown and now stands half in the water as a widely visible landmark.
