Amol, Ancient city in Mazandaran Province, Iran
Amol is located along the Haraz River banks in Mazandaran Province in northern Iran, positioned between the Caspian Sea and the Alborz Mountains. The city spreads across agricultural land known for rice production, where the Rice Research Institute of Iran conducts its work.
The settlement originated with the Iron Age Amardi tribe and held its position as Mazandaran's capital from the Sassanid period through the Ilkhanid era. Later, the city played an important role in trade routes connecting coastal and mountain regions.
The city preserves Persian traditions through rice cultivation, regional celebrations like Tiregan, and the production of pottery and basketwork, with artisans continuing these crafts using traditional methods.
Spring and autumn are the best times to visit when the weather is mild and rice fields show different growth stages. The city is walkable on foot, though local buses also serve longer routes around town.
Mount Damavand, the highest peak in the Middle East, stands near the city and makes Amol a starting point for mountaineering expeditions and geological research. On clear days, visitors can see the summit from the lowlands.
