Farsi Island, Military island in Bushehr Province, Iran
Farsi is a small Iranian island in the Persian Gulf covering roughly 0.25 square kilometers with a maximum height of 4 meters above sea level. A 23-meter-high lighthouse with black and white horizontal stripes dominates the landscape and serves as a navigation aid for passing vessels.
The island served as a base for the Iranian Revolutionary Guards during speedboat operations in the 1980s Tanker War. This period shaped its military importance in the region during the conflict between Iran and Iraq.
The name Farsi refers to Persian, linking the island to the regional identity of the Persian Gulf and Iran's maritime heritage. This connection is immediately recognizable in how locals and visitors refer to the place.
Navigation to the island requires caution due to shallow waters and strong currents in this part of the gulf. Visits are only possible in calm weather and must be arranged with proper authorization from authorities.
In 2016, a group of ten United States Navy personnel was detained in the island's territorial waters and later released following diplomatic negotiations. This incident drew worldwide attention to the location and its geopolitical significance.
